A Battery at the Fort du Roule. The Fort du Roule is a collection of French and German fortifications built in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries on the Roule mountain in Cherbourg ( Cherbourg-en-Cotentin since 2016). The first fortifications were built in 1793 to protect the Bay of Cherbourg from English attacks.

Fort du Roule allows visitors to walk into the cannon bunker complex below the fort. Tunnels cut into the rock had living quarters and ammunition storage for its 4 cannons. The 314th Infantry attacked with support from dive-bombing P-47s to clear la Mare a Canards and move within sight of Fort du Roule. Three attempts to take the fort were frustrated, but the 313th, on the flank, cut down resistance west of La Glacerie and Hameau Gringot, hauling in 320 prisoners and several artillery pieces.
