Headquarters Canyon in the Waterpocket Fold of Capitol Reef National Park offers a short, easy canyoneering adventure that the whole family can enjoy. The trail follows a sandy wash upstream to where it cuts its way down through the solid sandstone of the reef. The route is normally dry but there may be puddles after storms.

Climbing the strange sandstone ramp, Headquarters Canyon, Capitol Reef National Park The top of the slide is guarded by a 6-foot dryfall. With several hand and footholds, the green-stained pouroff can be easily climbed with a couple scrambling or chimney moves. (Obviously the ramp and dryfall are not recommended when wet.)

This canyon actually turned into a real slot canyon for a little bit. The temperature in this canyon was much cooler and more comfortable than Surprise Canyon was, and I thought it was more scenic, too. Back into the Slot Canyon. I really enjoyed the short hike into Headquarters Canyon and thought it was a great hike to finish up the week with!
