    In 1988 the JA headquarters comprised several ranch outbuildings, including a supply store and garage, and was dominated by the "Big House," whose grounds were well manicured. A herd of longhorns, courtesy of the JA, roamed in Palo Duro Canyon State Scenic Park. In 1960 the house was designated a national historic landmark.

Cornelia Wadsworth was born in 1837 and raised near Geneseo, New York on a farm her ancestors had purchased from the Seneca Indians. Hence, her tradition was one of keeping land in a family.

    The JA Ranch, founded jointly by John George Adair and Charles Goodnight, is the oldest privately owned cattle ranch in the Palo Duro Canyon section of the Texas Panhandle southeast of Amarillo, Texas. At its peak size in 1883, the JA, still managed by descendants of the Adair family, encompassed some 1,335,000 acres of land in six counties and a herd of 100,000 cattle.

    The largest purchase was the Tule Creek Ranch, for which the JA paid twenty cents per acre. Land was owned principally in Armstrong, Donley, Briscoe, Swisher, and Hall Counties. The office, seen here in the 1890's, is still standing. Construction on the present ranch house was started in 1879.

    In 1877, Goodnight in partnership with Englishman John Adair moved farther down the canyon to lay out headquarters of the JA Ranch. This pioneer venture became one of the greatest cattle operations in the world, taking in more than a million acres of land and grazing 101,023 head of cattle.
