The Ghost Army was officially known as the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops. From June 1944 to March 1945 it staged 20 battlefield deceptions, beginning in Normandy and ending along the Rhine River. The deceivers employed an array of inflatables (tanks, trucks, jeeps, airplanes), sound trucks, phony radio transmissions and even playacting to fool the enemy.

The 23rd Headquarters Special Troops probably played no part at all in Allied deception plans for the invasion of Normandy. The unit arrived in Britain only in early May 1944, about a month before the invasion, and were landed in Normandy about a week after D-Day.[1] The deception operations for the invasion of France had been running since 1943.
