In 1889-1890, the Chicago and North Western Railroad built their new $200,000 Lake Front Depot, located at the end of Wisconsin Avenue, near the present-day Milwaukee County War Memorial. The stone, Romanesque-style Lake Front Depot was designed by Charles Sumner Frost. At its busiest time, the Lake Front Depot serviced ninety-eight trains per day.
