Conference headquarters were established at the plantation of John Black, a man who remained unbaptized in order to provide refuge to the Church. Many converts, including Indians, moved onto his plantation to escape persecution. The Catawbas also shielded missionaries from persecutors.

Founded. The Southwestern States Mission was renamed from the Indian Territory Mission in 1898. Its name was changed again in 1904 to the Central States Mission and headquarters were moved from St. Johns, Kansas to Independence, Missouri. Beginning in 1907, the mission published a periodical called the Liahona.

In 1878 the headquarters of the newly established LDS Southern States Mission moved from Nashville, Tennessee, to Rome, Georgia. The church enjoyed notable success in northwest Georgia, especially in Chattooga County’s Haywood Valley.
